Reliable access to clean water depends on knowing that every treatment stage is actually working. In a project run by Odyssey Energy Solutions for its client Jibu, the compact Teltonika TRB140 industrial IoT gateway became the connectivity core of a distributed water purification network, giving administrators remote visibility over water quality across dozens of franchise sites on the African continent.

The Challenge: No Data, No Assurance

Jibu operates a network of franchises across Africa, each running a local water purification system that combines several treatment stages: pre-filtration, ultrafiltration, polishing, and chloramine injection. Every site must deliver consistently clean, germ-free water to its community.

The difficulty is decentralisation. As franchises multiply and spread into new and often remote locations, keeping consistent oversight of each purification system becomes far harder. Without centralised monitoring, administrators had no straightforward way to confirm that every stage was operating correctly and that the end product met quality standards. Jibu needed a way to monitor and control each system remotely, at scale.

The Solution: FernFlex Controller with the TRB140 Gateway

Odyssey Energy Solutions integrated its FernFlex controller with the Teltonika TRB140 IoT gateway at the heart of each installation. The FernFlex controller connects to the TRB140 over Ethernet, and the gateway supplies cellular internet connectivity to the site. Data transmission for water-quality testing runs over the widely supported Modbus protocol, enabling machine-to-machine (M2M) communication between the purification equipment and the remote platform.

This setup extracts detailed operational data from each system, including the volume of purified water produced (in litres) at each location, the status of key treatment components such as filters, total dissolved solids and residual chlorine measurements, and an overall indication of water quality. Administrators access all of it remotely through Odyssey's data-storage platform, while Teltonika's Remote Management System (RMS) handles central management and monitoring of every deployed TRB140 gateway.

Beyond monitoring, each gateway can be programmed to adjust system settings automatically based on predefined criteria. If a fault occurs in a critical stage — for example, a malfunction in the UV disinfection process — the system is configured to shut down automatically and the gateway sends alerts to designated recipients, ensuring a prompt response before water quality is compromised.

The TRB140 is an ultra-compact, energy-efficient industrial gateway built for single-device connectivity. Its LTE Cat 4 modem delivers download speeds up to 150 Mbps and upload speeds up to 50 Mbps, with automatic fallback to 3G and 2G to maintain connectivity in areas with weaker mobile coverage. A single 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet port provides the wired link to field equipment such as the FernFlex controller.

The device runs on RutOS, Teltonika's Linux-based operating system, which allows a high degree of customisation and support for industrial protocols including Modbus and DNP3. Security and management features include a firewall, OpenVPN and IPsec, SMS control, FOTA firmware updates, and full compatibility with the Teltonika Remote Management System for large-scale, remote administration.

Hardware is housed in a rugged aluminium enclosure with IP30 protection, measuring 74.5 × 25 × 64.4 mm and weighing 134 g. It is powered through a 4-pin connector accepting 9–30 VDC with reverse-polarity protection and passive PoE via the LAN port, drawing under 5 W. The gateway operates from −40 °C to 75 °C, includes one digital input and one digital output for sensor and alarm integration, and mounts on a DIN rail, wall, or flat surface.
