Teltonika RUT204: LTE Cat 4 Router with Native CAN FD for Vehicle and Machine Data

24 August 2026 Product News

The RUT204 from Teltonika Networks is a compact industrial cellular router that combines a native CAN FD interface with LTE Cat 4 connectivity in a single aluminium-housed unit. It is aimed at vehicle and machine data applications where CAN traffic has to reach a local or cloud server over a mobile network, without adding a separate CAN gateway next to the router.

Alongside the CAN hardware, the device integrates GNSS positioning, Wi-Fi 4, two Fast Ethernet ports, an RS232 serial port and a wide 9–57 V DC power input. It runs RutOS, Teltonika's OpenWrt-based Linux operating system, and connects to the Remote Management System (RMS) for remote configuration and fleet monitoring. The housing measures 83 × 25 × 83 mm, weighs 139.6 g and carries an IP30 rating.

Native CAN FD Interface and Serial Port

The distinguishing feature of the RUT204 is its native CAN FD interface. CAN traffic is read directly by the router, so a separate CAN-to-serial or CAN-to-Ethernet converter is not required in the signal path. The CAN interface and the RS232 port share a single 6-pin terminal block on the device.

On the software side, Teltonika lists CANopen client and SAE J1939 client support among the RutOS services with a "Planned" status. The physical CAN FD hardware is present on the device today; the higher-level protocol clients are documented as planned rather than shipping features. Buyers who require CANopen or J1939 handling in firmware should confirm the current RutOS release status before deployment.

The RS232 port and RutOS data services (Modbus, Data to Server, MQTT gateway functions) allow the router to collect data from serial and CAN-based equipment and forward it to a local server or a cloud platform.

Cellular Connectivity, Dual SIM and Positioning

The cellular modem operates at LTE Cat 4, with up to 150 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink, and falls back to 3G and 2G where LTE is unavailable. Two internal Mini-SIM (2FF) slots provide Dual SIM operation for automatic switching between carriers or data plans; Teltonika's product materials also state eSIM support. SIM switching, band management and SIM idle protection are handled in RutOS.

Integrated GNSS supports GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo, which allows the same device to report position data alongside the CAN and serial data it collects. This combination is the practical basis for telematics use, where vehicle location and machine data are transmitted together over the mobile network.

Interfaces, Power and PoE-in

The RUT204 provides two 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports (one WAN, configurable as LAN, and one LAN), Wi-Fi 4 in Access Point or Station mode, and dedicated antenna connectors: two SMA for mobile, one RP-SMA for Wi-Fi and one SMA for GNSS.

The wide 9–57 V DC input over the 2-pin DC socket suits vehicle and industrial power rails. The LAN port additionally accepts Active PoE-in per 802.3af Class 0 (12.94 W) or Passive PoE-in at 16–57 V DC, so the router can be powered over the Ethernet cable where a local DC supply is not convenient. The aluminium housing and the −40 °C to +75 °C operating range allow installation outside temperature-controlled rooms.

Interface Detail
Ethernet 2 × RJ45 10/100 Mbps (1 × WAN configurable as LAN, 1 × LAN)
Serial / CAN 6-pin terminal block: RS232 + CAN FD
Wireless Wi-Fi 4 (802.11 b/g/n), AP / STA
Antennas 2 × SMA (mobile), 1 × RP-SMA (Wi-Fi), 1 × SMA (GNSS)
Storage microSD up to 2 TB
Power 9–57 V DC (2-pin); Active/Passive PoE-in on LAN port

RutOS Software, Security and Remote Management

The RUT204 runs RutOS, Teltonika's OpenWrt-based firmware. It includes a range of VPN and tunnelling options — among them OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard, GRE, L2TP, DMVPN and ZeroTier — along with firewall, access control, VLAN and 802.1x. Management is available through the web UI, SSH, SNMP, MQTT, TR-069 and JSON-RPC.

For deployments at scale, the router connects to Teltonika's Remote Management System (RMS) for zero-touch provisioning, remote configuration, firmware updates over the air and status monitoring. RutOS also lists connectors for third-party platforms including Azure IoT Hub, AWS IoT Core, Cumulocity and ThingWorx.

Application Areas

The following applications follow directly from the documented hardware and interfaces.

Fleet telematics

GNSS positioning combined with the native CAN FD interface lets a single device report vehicle location and CAN data over LTE, without a separate tracking unit and CAN gateway.

GNSS + CAN FD

Construction and heavy machinery

The −40 °C to +75 °C range, aluminium housing and 9–57 V DC input support mounting on mobile equipment and in cabinets that are not climate-controlled.

−40…+75 °C · 9–57 V DC

Industrial and legacy equipment

The RS232 port together with RutOS Modbus and Data to Server functions connects PLCs, controllers and serial devices to a server or cloud platform.

RS232 + Modbus

Remote sites and kiosks
