The PLANET ITS-5216-8P4T-WV is an industrial Layer 2+ managed Gigabit Ethernet switch built around vibration-proof M12 connectors and a wide-range, redundant DC power input. It carries twelve Gigabit ports — eight of them IEEE 802.3at PoE+ — together with ERPS ring redundancy and an IP50 metal case rated for −40…+70 °C. The switch is aimed at rolling stock, trackside cabinets and roadside traffic control installations, where standard RJ-45 switches loosen under vibration and struggle with unstable supply voltage.
Why M12 and wide-range DC matter here
Railway vehicles and curb-side control cabinets expose network hardware to constant shock and vibration, large temperature swings and a fluctuating DC supply. The ITS-5216-8P4T-WV addresses this at the physical layer: all twelve Gigabit ports use 8-pin X-coded M12 connectors that lock mechanically instead of relying on an RJ-45 latch, so links stay stable under vibration and shock (tested to IEC 60068-2-6, -2-27 and -2-32). The IP50 metal enclosure keeps out dust and dirt, and the unit operates across −40…+70 °C without active cooling.

Rugged Gigabit connectivity with managed PoE+
12 × Gigabit M12 · 8 × 802.3at PoE+ · −40…+70 °C · Dual 24–110 V DC · IP50 · ERPS G.8032
As one of PLANET's managed industrial Ethernet switches, this model uses eight of its twelve ports as IEEE 802.3at PoE+ sources, delivering up to 36 W each to cameras, wireless access points or VoIP phones. Total power drawn simultaneously is set by the DC input: the switch supplies an 80 W PoE budget at a DC input of 36 V or below, and a 100 W budget above 36 V. Powered devices can sit up to 100 m away in standard mode, or up to 250 m in PoE extend mode. Intelligent PoE functions — PD Alive Check, PoE Schedule and scheduled power recycling — let the switch ping a connected device and power-cycle its port automatically if the device stops responding.
Availability is handled on two fronts. The dual 24–110 V DC input runs redundantly: if the first feed drops, hardware failover keeps the switch running on the second without interruption. On the network side, ITU-T G.8032 ERPS forms a self-healing ring with a recovery time below 450 ms, and MSTP/RSTP cover meshed or legacy topologies. As an L2+ device it also performs IPv4/IPv6 hardware static routing, alongside VLAN, QoS, IGMP/MLD snooping and link aggregation.
For surveillance networks, the switch discovers ONVIF cameras from its web GUI and lets operators upload a floor plan to place and monitor devices. Security is enforced through DHCP snooping, dynamic ARP inspection, IP source guard, DoS prevention, 802.1X port authentication with RADIUS/TACACS+, and SNMPv3 with SSH and TLS for encrypted management. A digital input/output pair and a relay alarm output signal door contacts, port breakdown or power failure, and the unit integrates with PLANET UNI-NMS and the CloudNMS app for remote management.
Application scenarios
Trackside and on-board rail networks — Locking M12 connectors, shock and vibration testing to IEC 60068 and the −40…+70 °C range suit trackside enclosures and rolling stock. The dual wide-range DC input adapts to onboard 24–110 V supplies.
Roadside ITS and traffic cabinets — PoE+ powers roadside cameras, detectors and access points over a single cable, while 6 KV surge protection and the wide DC input cope with exposed curb-side power. ERPS links cabinets into a resilient ring.
IP surveillance backbones — Eight PoE+ ports, ONVIF discovery, PD Alive Check and scheduled reboot keep camera fleets online, and PoE extend mode reaches devices up to 250 m from the switch.
Harsh-environment automation — The fanless IP50 build, dual redundant power and ring recovery below 450 ms support continuous operation in cabinets exposed to dust, vibration and temperature extremes.
