ICP DAS announces the launch of the RIO-98x0 redundant expansion distributed I/O systems. Serial production is scheduled for Q2 2025. This solution is designed to improve reliability and stability in industrial monitoring and control systems and is an improvement on the iDCS-8830 series.
There will be three models available:
-
RIO-9830 with Modbus TCP communication modules (available in Q2 2025)
-
RIO-9840 with EtherCAT bus (release date unknown yet)
-
RIO-9850 with EthernetIP interface (release date unknown yet)
Various input/output modules can be installed in the system: analog, discrete, modules for connecting temperature sensors (thermocouples and resistance thermometers), a pulse counter, as well as HART bus communication modules.
Module list:
R-9040 – 32 channels of discrete input (source/sink), discrete filter (1~32767 ms)
R-9041 – 32 channels of discrete output (source), Power-on value and Safety value functions
R-9017C1H – 8 channels of analog input 4~20 mA, 16-bit ADC, HART master
R-9017C2H – 16 channels of analog input 4~20 mA, 16-bit ADC, HART master
R-9015 – 12 channels for connecting Pt100, Pt1000, JPt100 thermistors. Sensor break function
R-9019 – 16 channels for connecting thermocouples of type J, K, T, E, R, S, B, N, C. Sensor break function
R-9028V1 – 8 channels of analog output 1~5V or +/-10V, 16-bit DAC
R-9028CH – 8 channels of analog output 4~20mA, 16-bit DAC, HART master
R-9084 – 8 channels of pulse signal input, incremental counter, frequency meter
Key features:
-
Improved indication. In the iDCS-8830, there are three LED indicators on the communication modules that signal an error, for visual diagnostics of a malfunction. In the new RIO-98X0 series there are two seven-segment blocks for the communication modules, which output the error code, allowing the engineer to more accurately understand the cause of the malfunction. Logs with time stamps, including errors, are saved to the MicroSD card.
-
Simplified connection of signals to I/O modules. The previous version used external boards for connection, in RIO-98X0 the board is implemented as an overlay on the modules.
-
More flexible configuration. Modules in the system can be configured differently: dual (duplex), and also used as single modules. For example, you can install 4 duplex modules, or 2 duplex ones and 4 single ones, or 8 single modules, etc.
-
RIO-98X0, like iDCS, supports hot-swap redundancy of I/O modules and communication modules, and there is no need to reconfigure the modules, the settings are automatically pulled from memory. The switching time to the backup I/O module is less than 1 ms. The I/O modules are equipped with LED indication of the signal status, module operating mode, module operating status, hardware error indicator.
-
Redundant power supply. As with iDCS, you can still ensure power continuity by connecting a secondary power supply to a second power module. RPM-D24 power modules support 24Vdc +/- 10% power supply, and a 5A fuse is built into the modules to protect against overvoltage.
Ring redundancy of Ethernet communication lines (when using RSM-405 managed switches with the Ether Ring redundancy function) and EtherCAT supported.
To configure the system, ICP DAS provides the RIO-98X0-98x0 Utility. The following parameters are set in it:
-
I/O module settings
-
Configuration of communication parameters
-
Downloading and unloading of configuration
-
Online viewing of signal values
-
Displaying the system status
-
Updating the firmware

The system is mounted on a 19” rail using the RNOD-01 mounting kit. If necessary, the AFAN-04 cooling module can be installed to the system.
