NPort and what is it for

Today, you can find the RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 serial interface devices in almost any industry. Of course, the era of the Internet and industrial Ethernet is beginning to occupy a large share of the automation market, but the serial interface devices are still in high demand and widespread, to say the least.

According to MOXA forecasts, the share of COM-devices in the industry will continue to grow at least until 2020. To meet current trends and integrate equipment with serial interfaces in an Ethernet network, MOXA has been producing serial NPort servers for almost 20 years - the most popular devices of this type in the world.

NPort are serial interface servers that are designed to connect devices with RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 interfaces to an Ethernet network and transmit the data without any changes to it.

One of the features of serial interface servers is the "virtual COM port" function, which allows the computer to exchange information with RS-232/422/485 devices as if they are connected to a real COM port.

Another common function is Pair Connection, which allows you to transfer RS-232/422/485 interfaces over an Ethernet network.

NPort 5000/5000A series


The NPort 5000 serial interface server is designed to solve a wide range of tasks for connecting devices with RS-232/422/485 interfaces to an Ethernet network.

NPort 5000 supports about 20 operating systems including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, QNX and many others. After installing the driver, you can work with COM devices via a virtual COM port.

The NPort 5000 can be configured through:

NPort IA5000/IA5000A series


NPort IA5000 are compact DIN-rail serial interface serves with redundant DC power inputs with relay or email notification and built-in switch with 2 LAN ports (one IP and MAC address).

NPort IA5000 have the C1D2, ATEX, IECEx and DNV/GL industrial certification.

NPort devices with IEX at end have an IECEx certificate.

NPort devices with the letter “I” at end have a 2 kV optical isolation of the COM port.

NPort devices with the letter “T” at end can operate at temperatures from -40 to 75 °C.

NPort 5000AI-M12 series


The NPort 5000AI-M12 devices are equipped with protected M12 connectors and are suitable for rolling stock railway applications, as defined by the EN 50121-4 and EN 50155 standards and vibration protection, as defined by the IEC 60068-2-6 standard. The housing is made of metal and has IP40 protection. All serial ports have 2 kV optical isolation.

You can manage the device through the MXview utility.

NPort devices with the letter “T” at end can operate at temperatures from -40 to 75 °C.

The voltage range is 12 to 48 VDC or 120 to 370 VDC and 85 to 264 VAC with an external adapter.

NPort P5150A series


The NPort P5150A serial interface servers support the IEEE 802.3af standard, which allows the device to be powered via an Ethernet cable using PoE technology.

Serial interfaces have an overvoltage protection corresponding to EN61000-4-5 Level 2 Surge.

NPort 5600 series


The NPort 5600 serial interface servers have 8 or 16 serial ports, which allows you to exchange data with many devices.

The size of the device allows you to install it in a 19-inch rack.

The standard version is powered by a 100-240 VAC, the HV version - 88-300 VDC.

NPort 5600-8-DT/NPort 5600-8-DTL series


The NPort 5600-8-DT/DTL serial interface servers are more compact than the original NPort 5600 devices.

NPort S8000 series


The NPort S8000 server is a combination of a managed switch and a serial interface server. There are both copper and optical Ethernet ports.

Supports Turbo Ring and Turbo Chain redundancy technologies.

NPort W2000A series


NPort W2000A has a Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless interface and supports the Fast Roaming function, which allows you to switch to another wireless access point in less than 500 ms.

NPort W2000A also has an overvoltage protection corresponding to IEC 61000-4-5.

NPort 6000 series


The NPort 6000 terminal server supports SSH and SSL encryption protocols, DES, 3DES, AES encryption algorithms and IP routing.

NPort 6000 supports the Turbo Ring function via expansion module, ensuring the reliability and high availability of your Ethernet network and guarantees a recovery time of less than 20 ms.

NPort 6000 allows you to save data when a connection is disconnected via Ethernet, all data will be stored in a 64-KB buffer or on an SD card.

NPort CN2500 series


The NPort CN2500 server has only RS-232 interfaces and a single 1 Ethernet port. Does not have a WEB interface. Supports IP routing and security protocols.

NPort CN2600 series


A distinctive feature of the CN2600 servers is the availability of 2 independent Ethernet ports, each with its own MAC address. CN2600 also has 2 input AC power terminals for AC devices. WEB interface, IP routing and security protocols are supported.

The voltage range for AC version is 100 to 240 VAC, 88 to 300 VDC for HV.
