MOXA has developed the new gateway MGate 5119-T, which allows an IEC 61850 Client device to poll Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP, IEC 60870-5-101/104 and DNP3 TCP/UDP/serial slave devices. The MGate 5119-T gateway is useful both for retrofitting outdated substations and for connecting third-party equipment to an existing system.
The current tendency towards Digitalization and Industry 4.0 has set a trend in the power industry for the modernization and implementation of a digital substation in accordance with the IEC 61850 protocol, which allows better and safer management of not only local but also remote substations. Converting all substations to the IEC 61850 protocol at the same time is expensive and difficult, because the main equipment does not support the IEC 61850 protocol, but uses the common industrial protocols Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101/104 or DNP3. The MGate 5119-T gateway allows you to keep this equipment and makes it possible to conveniently connect it to a modern digital substation control system.
The MGate 5119-T gateway makes it possible for an IEC 61850 Client device to poll such devices as:
- Modbus RTU/ASCII Slave
- Modbus TCP Server
- IEC 60870-5-101 Slave
- IEC 60870-5-104 Server
- DNP3 TCP/UDP Outstation
- DNP3 serial Outstation
To connect the MGate 5119-T gateway to the IEC 61850 Client, you need to import the gateway SCL settings file, which is usually created by a third-party tool. This process can be inconvenient, time-consuming, and incur additional costs. To overcome this problem, MGate 5119-T has a built-in SCL generator that allows you to easily generate SCL files through the web console, saving time and money.
When setting up the gateway, a situation may arise when all the settings are correct, but in general the system does not work. To quickly localize the problem, the MGate 5119-T gateway has built-in traffic monitoring, which, together with the popular Wireshark network traffic analyzer, makes it easy to determine the source of the problem and start the system in a short time.
A modern solution should be not only convenient, but also secure, so the MGate 5119-T gateway was designed in accordance with the IEC 62443 and NERC CIP cybersecurity standard, which allows you to protect yourself from unauthorized access and potential accidents. The following functions are used for protection:
- Password cracking protection. It will no longer be possible to use the default password for greater ease of use. The MGate 5119-T has implemented a password policy that encourages the user to use stronger passwords to protect against unwanted access.
- Protection against sniffers and data leaks. Using plain text for device configuration can be dangerous. The MGate 5119-T gateway supports SSL/TLS data encryption during hardware configuration, which helps protect the gateway from data interception.
- Configuration file tamper protection. The MGate 5119-T encrypts the configuration file when it is exported to ensure its integrity and protect against modification.
- DDoS protection and suspicious activity detection. The MGate 5119-T gateway allows you to detect anomalous packets and warn the user about it.
To ensure uninterrupted communication in substations, reliable gateways are needed that can withstand harsh operating conditions. To meet these requirements, the MGate 5119 gateway features 2kV serial port isolation, IEC 61850-3/IEEE 1613 compliant, wide temperature range -40 to 75°C, and a 5-year warranty.
