Bedrock Embedded PCs from SolidRun - more performance through optimized design

06 March 2023 Product News
The crucial problem of modern processors is less the miniaturization of electrical circuits than their efficient cooling - an approach that embedded PCs like the V3000-Basic from the Bedrock SolidRun series take advantage of to achieve far above-average performance in a fanless design. For example, they combine AMD Ryzen processors with a unique and innovative ventilation system that uses a chimney effect to create a permanent airflow like an active fan, while remaining silent and using no mechanical wear parts.

Bedrock SolidRun Embedded PC - unique design for maximum performance

The movement of electrons in electrical conductors causes unavoidable heat, which circuits radiate as thermal energy. It not only increases power consumption, but also has a negative impact on computing performance because it slows down communication and requires active error control.
The Bedrock SolidRun Series V3000-Basic embedded PC therefore uses an innovative cooling design with a three-dimensional structure that creates a chimney effect from the warm and expanding air. As a result, the Bedrock SolidRun industrial PC creates a continuous airflow that changes with the temperature of the processor and is thus independently regulated without sensors. It enables efficient cooling of the CPU including connected components and the motherboard - completely automatically and without active monitoring or control of fans or other mechanical components.

Many small details make a decisive difference

The chassis of the V3000-Basic and other embedded PCs in the Bedrock SolidRun family consists of an all-aluminum case with cooling fins connected to the processor via hundreds of "heat pipes" or thermal channels. Instead of a conventional cooling paste, the series also uses Liquid Metal TIM to create optimal heat conduction between the chip and the chassis. In addition, important components like the RAM of up to 64 GB DDR5 RAM - optionally with error control by ECC - and the two extension slots for NVMe SSD are thermally coupled to the CPU to the chassis to avoid hotspots.
Although the V3000-Basic, like other embedded PCs from the Bedrock SolidRun series, is visually indistinguishable from conventional competitors, it clearly demonstrates the potential that lies dormant in optimized and carefully planned industrial computers. For example, with an identical power dissipation of 45 watts TDP, it achieves almost twice the CPU performance of a Xeon D-15641 processor with significantly lower energy consumption 24/7/365 with changing idle times and peak loads.

Versatile I/O opens up numerous options for application

Like most models in the Bedrock SolidRun range, the V3000-Basic is ideally suited for use as a server in complex networks and for this purpose has a 5G modem with dual SIM, WLAN 6E for the 6 GHz band and two ports for 10 GbE SFP+ as well as four 2.5 GbE RJ45 LANs. Other native interfaces include three USB 3.2 ports and a serial console via mini-USB, among others, in addition to basic USB 2.0. The modular design also includes a so-called deck-of-cards concept, which enables installation in a custom enclosure without compromising the cooling or performance of Bedrock SolidRun Embedded PCs.
