MGate 5121/5122/5123: industrial gateway series for converting high-level CAN protocols, such as CANopen and J1939, to Modbus TCP/Ethernet/IP/PROFINET

Previously, Moxa has already implemented J1939 CAN protocol conversion in the MGate 5118. gateway series, but support for such a high-level CAN protocol as CANopen was implemented for the first time and in the new series MGate 5121/5122/5123.


CANopen is an open top-level protocol used in embedded real-time distributed control systems. CANopen has found its main application in areas such as machine automation, railway transport, and is also widely used in traffic control systems and energy sectors. It provides the ability to control devices with high precision and efficiency, making it a sought-after tool for industrial applications.

But quite often, there are tasks where CANopen and J1939 devices existing on the network need to be integrated into systems operating using other industrial protocols, such as Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP or PROFINET. To transfer data to the upper level from devices operating only via the CANopen or J1939 protocols, you need a solution that allows you to exchange data with master devices on the network. In this case, the new MGate 5121/5122/5123 series protocol gateways can be used to complete this task and provide a solution for converting data transfer protocols both in an existing system and when building a new communication network.


So, MGate 5121/5122/5123 gateways allow devices with Modbus TCP/Ethernet/IP/PROFINET support to poll CAN slave devices on the network.


  • Серия MGate 5121 - designed for integrating CANopen/J1939 devices into the Modbus TCP network for subsequent data exchange, with the ability to connect up to 16 Modbus TCP clients.
  • Серия MGate 5122 - allows CANopen/J1939 devices to connect to an Ethernet/IP network to work with an Ethernet/IP scanner and the ability to connect up to 4 Ethernet/IP scanners.
  • Серия MGate 5123 - aggregates CANopen/J1939 devices with the PROFINET network for further data collection and exchange with PROFINET controllers, with the ability to connect up to 2 PROFINET IO controllers with shared access.

These gateway series include two Ethernet ports with 1.5 kV isolation and one CAN interface with 2 kV isolation.

The key characteristics of these new gateways include:

  • Simultaneous conversion of CANopen and J1939 protocols
  • Support for polling via SNMP
  • Built-in traffic monitoring and diagnostic information for simplified troubleshooting
  • Easily configuration using the web console
  • Support for two redundant DC power inputs and one relay output
  • MicroSD support for saving configuration
  • Availability of models with a wide range of operating temperatures from -40 to 75°

Also one of the important advantages of MGate 5121/5122/5123 industrial gateways is that they were developed in accordance with the IEC 62443-4-2 standard, which contains technical requirements for cybersecurity of components of industrial control systems, such as embedded devices, network components, etc.


The new gateways are designed in a metal case, and each one has 2 models, including a model with a wide operating temperature range:
